The Government of Japan approved a- JPY 700 million grant assistance to UN-Habitat for its Programme for Development and Rehabilitation of Communities in the Kachin, Chin and Shan States of Myanmar.
On 22 March 2013 in Nay Pyi Taw the Notes on the grant assistance were signed and exchanged between the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar , His Excellency Mr. Mikio Numata and Mr. Srinivasa Popuri, Senior Human Settlements Officer of UN-Habitat Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific . The Exchange of Notes was held in the presence of Deputy Minister for Border Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar,His Excellency Major General Zaw Win.
The overall objective of the 12 month duration programme being funded by the Japanese Grant is to assist communities of conflict affected areas in the Kachin State, and most impoverished communities in the Chin and Shan States. Approximately 50,000 households (250,000 persons) from 4 townships in the Kachin State, 3 Townships each from the Chin State and the Shan State will benefit from programme.
The project will be participatory community-driven recovery and reintegration and will include community infrastructure, shelter, water and sanitation, hygiene education, cash-for-work activities, skills development and vocational training.
The grant of the equivalent of USD 7.4 Million by the Government of Japan is by far the largest grant received by UN-Habitat for its programmes and projects in Myanmar.
