The Asia-Pacific Issue Brief Series on Urbanization and Climate Change

The Asia-Pacific Issue Brief Series on Urbanization and Climate Change is a joint initiative of UN-Habitat and the UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre. The briefs bring forward some critical issues raised by ten municipal government representatives from Asian-Pacific cities at the Climate Change and Pro-poor Urban Governance Capacity Development Workshop: Promoting Sustainable Human Development in Asia-Pacific Cities organized in October 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Building on the rich discussions at the workshop, the issue brief series aims to: (i) highlight key linkages between climate change and inclusive and sustainable urbanization; (ii) provide contemporary data, analysis and city examples for policy makers, practitioners and other relevant stakeholders with the view to facilitate an ongoing discussion on how to develop urban climate change response strategies that are pro-poor and inclusive; and (iii) encourage city to city exchange of knowledge and experiences between urban development stakeholders in the region.

Finally, the issue briefs can be used as a tool to unpack cross-sectoral linkages for more comprehensive policy and programmatic responses to addresses critical challenges of urbanization in the context of climate change vulnerabilities and sustainable human development.
