Closure of UN-Habitat Information and Dissemination Office in Chennai, India

13 April, 2016, Fukuoka - The closure of the UN-Habitat Information and Dissemination Office in Chennai is a decision taken in line with UN-Habitat's ongoing strategic development and relationship with the Government of India.

At the request of our Governing Council and the UN Secretariat, UN-Habitat has established a number of digital knowledge management and information dissemination platforms such as an improved publication download facility, an open data portal( www.open.unhabitat.org)and the Urban Gateway.

In line with the UN’s Paper smart initiative, in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, and combined with a decrease in demand for printed publications, these platforms will facilitate much of the information and dissemination needs of UN-Habitat in the future.

At national level, an enhanced office in New Delhi will make available to all stakeholders the full services of the agency, including Urban Thinkers Campuses, National Urban Campaigns and technical expertise. It will also deepen our cooperation at the central level to further support work with our line Ministry, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, and other partners such as other UN bodies on a day-to-day basis.

UN-Habitat has good contacts within Chennai and Tamil Nadu State and will continue to maintain these going forward.
