The Fourth Expert Group Meeting on Sustainable Environmental Technology was held under the theme of (1) Water and (2) Sustainable Urban Development. On Day One, unique and innovative yet sustainable water solutions and technologies were introduced by Japanese local governments and private sector companies. For example, Fukuoka City introduced its water conservation know how and expertise, based on its experience of severe drought and scarce water sources.
From the private sector, innovative solutions for water security were introduced; such as small scale decentralized seawater desalination systems, rainwater treatment drinking water systems, rainwater catchment nets, and so on.
On Day Two, innovative urban development initiatives and ideas were shared, starting from Kitakyushu City; a smart city initiative which enables a cogeneration of industrial and residential a zones by utilizing energy generated from the industrial areas. Also introduced were refining architecture technology which enables reinforcement and retrofitting of old existing structures without scrapping the buildings, and more; a total of 12 technologies and experiences were introduced. From Asia and the Pacific Region, representatives from 13 countries and cities shared their current situations and issues related to water and urban development.
