TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE ON SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN PENANG ISLAND THROUGH COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

Background

The primary aim of the project is to provide technical assistance to UNDP and stakeholders in formulating a project document for the new programme, "Solid Waste Management through Community Participation using Penang as a Model". The new project will build on the lessons learnt from the UNDP's two on-going programmes: LA21 and PPPUE in Penang. The programme will then be used to build dialogue between communities and policy makers using the bottom-up approach.

Results

SWM expert was fielded and SERI was engaged to mobilise stakeholders in designing the new project document. Several stakeholders consultations were organised to articulate the needs and provided inputs to the design work. It is expected that these groups be active participants in the implementation of the new project. The draft project document entitled, Support to Penang Sate for Stakeholder- driven Sustainable Solid Waste Management was prepared for further implementation with a view to set a model for the national level policy formulation. UN-Habitat SCP is expected to partner with this new project.
