Sustainable Cities Programme (Completed)

Basic Urban Services Support Project

Responding to the Government’s request for specialised technical support in solid waste management, an issue that all 18 cities had prioritised under the Urban Governance Support Programme, UN-HABITAT’s SCP provided specialise support to the capital city of Kotte in 2005, to test out innovative approaches to compost waste in homes, support urban poor groups through community-based waste recycling sheds, and convert market wastes into bio-gas. The results of these pilot projects were documented during 2006, providing the basis of support from the Ministry of Environment to Kotte Municipality to develop a citywide strategy to replicate the lessons learned. The strategy was prepared in a participatory manner through a cross-sectoral working group, which has further informed the Ministry in pragmatic ways to implement its national policy guidelines for more sustainable solid waste management. Further application of the lessons learned and national application are planned for 2007.
