Campaign for Sumatra Earthquake/Tsunami Relief
UN-HABITAT Fukuoka Office launched a nationwide fund-raising campaign together with its supporting organization, the Japan Habitat Association to help bring relief to survivors of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Disaster occurred in last December. In response to this call, a number of initiatives have been launched both in the public and private sectors, and by 1 April 2005, approximately JPY 42,000,000 (about US$ 425,000) has been collected from citizens, mainly in Fukuoka.
The UN-HABITAT Fukuoka Office has allocated the funds for the following projects to support reconstructing housing and community infrastructure destroyed by the tsunami.

Construction of Short-term Housing and Community Facility
On the island of Guraidhoo in Kaafu Atoll, 7 months after the tsunami 9 homeless families continue to live on tents on the beach. The International Federation of the Red Cross is partnering UN recovery efforts on the island, and rebuilding new homes there. As the reconstruction work is scheduled to begin in a few months time, this proposal has been designed - in line with the Shelter Programme strategy - in response to the urgent need to alleviate the ongoing discomfort of the island’s 9 homeless families.
Within the framework of the Shelter Recovery Program, the project will fund the construction of a community facility to provide short-term housing for the 9 homeless families. The Island Women’s Development Committee (WDC) will work closely with the Shelter Recovery Programme in the design and management of the unit. Following the relocation of families to their new homes, the facility will continue to benefit the island as a community center under the custodianship of the WDC, with special emphasis on accommodating women’s activities.
