Background and Objectives
Responding to the floods in Sindh and Baluchistan Provinces was a challenge for the newly established National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in terms of information management, effective coordination of the many stakeholders and monitoring the progress of services being provided to those affected. NDMA expressed need for an information system that would include a standard reporting system from all the stakeholders, so that coordination and monitoring of implementation progress will be harmonized and gaps can be identified. The overall objective is to improve the decision-making and coordination for flood response through enhanced information collection, analysis and dissemination.
Activities
The main activities include:
* Develop an information system that will collect, process and disseminate information to all the parties involved in post disaster relief and rehabilitation work in flood affected areas;
* Develop standard procedures for information collection in order to facilitate data collection and tracking: Who is doing What Where (WWW);
* To monitor the progress of relief and recovery activities through data processing and preparation GIS maps and other information products.
Results (2008)
* Establishment of a GIS/MIS unit at Federal level that is responsible for data collection, data processing, data management and preparation of reports and maps;
* GIS maps showing needs and progress of various aspects of the flood disaster relief and recovery activities in the affected areas; weekly reports on progress and trends of the post flood disaster relief and recovery activities by cluster and regular updates of information on the web for all stakeholders;
* Standard reporting systems agreed upon and adopted by all actors involved in the flood response.
