The third Asian City Journalist Conference was held as a side event of the Fourth World Urban Forum in Nanjing, China. Discussions were held based on the theme of the World Urban Forum, 'Seeking Harmonious Cities' from a media perspective, and reflecting on the state of Asian Cities. Very active discussions were held in search for responses to questions such as ; how can journalists help to harmonize the various interests, diversity and inherent contradictions within cities? What ingredients are needed to create harmony between the physical, social, environmental and cultural aspects of a city and the human beings that inhabit it from the journalist's viewpoint?
The Asia and the Pacific Region has witnessed spectacular economic growth and a consequent reduction in poverty over recent decades, with cities playing a crucial role in the economic transformation of the Region, now contributing up to 80 percent of gross national product in many countries. Urban growth is a result of a combination of factors: geographical location, natural population growth, rural-to-urban migration, infrastructure development, national policies, corporate strategies, and other major political, social and economic factors, including globalization. How can journalists help to harmonize the various interests, diversity and inherent contradictions within cities? What ingredients are needed to create harmony between the physical, social, environmental and cultural aspects of a city and the human beings that inhabit it from the journalist's viewpoint?
