The Environmental Technology Expert Group Meeting II was held on 30th September, 2010 in Fukuoka, Japan. The meeting this year focused on the issue of ‘Energy’; clean, renewable, reusable and alternative energy technologies and know-how. In order to cover a wide range of technologies related to this field, the meeting was divided into two parts. Part I covered the latest and large scale energy technologies available in Japan such as hydrogen energy power, solar power, geothermal power and large scale biomass energy generating technologies. In Part II, sustainable and smaller scale energy solutions, some which could readily be introduced to countries and cities in Asia, were introduced. Some of these technologies were heat insulating coating paint, sustainable water wheels, and portable solar cookers. From the Asia region, representatives from local authorities, academia and UN-HABITAT country offices explained about their current energy situations, the serious issues and challenges many countries and cities face. Following the presentations, very active discussions were held among the experts on how some of these challenges could be addressed by utilizing the technologies introduced.
